New HP Education Initiatives (and grants!)

HP announces four new education initiatives - see www.hp.com/go/edgrants for details:

HP Catalyst Initiative
Through the HP Catalyst Initiative, HP is building a global network of consortia that will explore innovations in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics learning and teaching. In 2010, each of 5 consortia will receive more than $1 million in technology, cash, and professional assistance. For more information, visit www.hp.com/go/hpcatalyst. APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS PASSED. Recipients will be announced ~ September 3rd.

HP EdTech Innovators Award
HP and the New Media Consortium (NMC) have teamed to launch the HP EdTech Innovators Award to showcase and support educators who are using technology in groundbreaking ways inside and outside the classroom. In 2010, a maximum of ten education institutions will each receive an HP technology grant valued at approximately $40,000 (HP list price). For more information, visit www.hp.com/go/edtech. APPLICATION DEADLINE HAS PASSED. Recipients will be announced early September 2010

HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs

HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HP LIFE) is a global training program that builds IT and business skills among recent graduates, aspiring entrepreneurs and small business owners, helping them transform their lives and the lives of others in their communities. HP & the US National Lab Day(s) Program
In the United States, HP is supporting the National Lab Day program through a yearlong campaign of skilled volunteering, backed by HP technology and cash donations. www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2010/100512c.html. K-12 teachers in the U.S. may create projects and request a volunteer at www.nationallabday.org

The HP Office for Global Social Innovation hosted the Summit in collaboration with the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) from February 22-24.

E-Learning and developing countries

As a member of iearn, I have been informed about HP grants for innovating education.
I have been doing online projects with my students for years. Only last year did I have access to the internet and a video projector in my classroom. So, even though I teach in a very good high school in France, the material necessary to make online projects is not enough implemented.

3D environment model enhances collaboration during learning

Spanish researchers at the Universidad Politecnica de Madrid's Facultad de Informatica have developed a 3D virtual environment model for collaborative learning.



Collaborative learning is important for these reasons:



  1. many minds working together to learn a task or process is very effective.

  2. getting people to communicate with each other as they work together to complete a task, builds trust and respect, and ensures that the best possible resolution is arrived

ISTE is collaborating with Hewlett-Packard in the launch of a new global grant program called the HP Catalyst Initiative, which explores what the future of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education can look like.
